Words Matter

Your words often predict your future outcome. You’re either setting yourself up for success or failure with the words that come out of your mouth.

During my consults, I often attempt to help future members with their mindset. We all know we need to eat well and exercise to get results, but somewhere along the way you stumble, fail, and give up due to life’s circumstances.

Was it really the circumstances or was it your mindset? I would argue that 90%+ of the time it’s the client’s mindset.

How do I know this? I’ve learned to listen really well during the consults and I hear the excuses when I receive cancellation emails.

What might I hear during a consult you might ask?

  1. I might be traveling in the future for work and we have a vacation in a few months.
  2. I want to try it out to see if I like it.
  3. I’ll try it for a month.
  4. I’m afaid of failing again. Last time I did something like this I got a few months in and quit due to being busy.
  5. If I need to cancel what are your policies?
  6. I may be moving in 6 months.
  7. I don’t want to commit for that long.

One might argue that some of these are valid reasons and I would agree that sometimes they are. You have to understand at the same time that the prospect actively sought us out, booked an appointment wanting to get a problem solved with our help, and made the time to come in and chat.

They made up their mind it was time to investigate and with a strong possibility start TODAY.

The bottom line is this: There is fear of failure with every single person coming in. There is fear of spending money and failing to take advantage of their membership. There is fear of not fitting in.

We understand all of these fears and we do our very best to make every step of the way as comfortable as possible.

Back to the mindset at hand.

Your words predict your future outcome. Playing the “what if game” is setting the stage for you to quit. The more what if’s you have the more of a chance you are giving yourself to throw in the towel.

I do my best during consults to challenge these thoughts and help people to deal with these words.

How does this play out and how can you change it?

  1. I might be traveling in the future. Guess what? So is half the gym, at least. They aren’t quitting because of this and neither should you. You travel, workout on the road, and get back in the gym when you come back in town.
  2. I want to try it to see if I like it. I hope you like it, but if you don’t, and it works extremely well, I would encourage you to put your liking it on the bottom of the priority list. Comfortable workouts don’t work.
  3. I’ll try it for a month. Might or might not be a good idea. Nothing wrong with a test drive right? There is a strong possibility that you are basing the trial on likes and dislikes and a month isn’t very long in the grand scheme of things. 3-6 months is far more realistic.
  4. I’m afraid of failing again. We get it. The good news is that you’re going to fail again with us sooner or later and we have systems in place as well as great experience in failing ourselves. You just can’t quit. The idea is to keep falling forward and to learn from your failures. Get back up, re-plan, and execute.
  5. So you’re worried about canceling already and you haven’t even started yet. Interesting right? Yes, know the policies before starting and signing, I get it. Fact is, 8/10 never ask. If you are I’d look at getting your commitment level as high as your concern of cancelling.
  6. You may be moving. We’ll deal with that if and when it comes. Guess what? People lie. Don’t be shocked. I have people cancel and tell me they’re moving, only to see them still living in the same town with the same job on social media.
  7. I don’t wan to commit for that long? You know why and so do I. You want to be able to quit “If” _________.

You get the picture. I might be off on a few small details, but I’ve also done over 10k consults and processed thousands of cancellations.

Your mindset is where your success lies. If you can think and speak success, chances are your butt and feet will follow.
