We often want things to happen right away and we tend to get frustrated when things don’t happen on our timetable. In the gym, we might have a specific weight-loss goal or a particular skill we want to pick up.
How do we get there?
The best, least frustrating way, is to stack small wins. Far too often I think people have the expectation of big wins that come sooner rather than later, but that is rarely the case.
Small, incremental progress over time will eventually lead to the results you seek. The problem often lies in our impatience and unrealistic expectations.
The best way to create small wins for yourself is to do this:
- Make a plan with acitonable steps. List them out and cross them off each week. If it’s not written down, chances are it won’t happen.
- Celebrate the small wins and build off of them. If you lose 2lb that will motivate you, right? If you wake up early for the 6am class everyday and you’ve avoided that in the past, that’s a win, right? Don’t minimize your small wins, they’re what big time progress is made of.
- Ask for help. You want to be focusing on the right things and to be doing them the right way. Often times when pursuing something we can find ourselves in a position where we feel stuck, or we don’t know what to do or if we are doing ok. Having someone to hold you accountable and point you in the right direction is an invaluable asset to your success.
