Why Diets Don’t Work

If you want to lose weight and build lean muscle, you have to control your nutrition.

If you’re trying to lose fat by joining a gym—but not changing what you eat—it won’t work. Not even our workouts, which are the best in Noblesville will combat poor nutrition.

But the problem is that diets don’t work. And they usually backfire. People do good for a month or two and revert back to their old eating habits. I hear short term success stories almost daily during consults.

So what CAN you do to control your weight?

  1. Start tracking what you eat. Just writing it down makes a huge difference. Record it in a blank notebook or use apps like MyFitnessPal. We like MyFitnessPal because it integrates with the TrueCoach APP and lets your coach see how your nutrition lines up with your goals.
  1. Replace carbs with healthy fats and lean proteins. We have to control your blood sugar. Carbs need to be strategically eaten and they need to be the right kind of carbs too, not just any old carb.
  1. Drink actual water and a lot of it. Most people don’t drink enough water. No, coffee doesn’t count. Drink water, the clear stuff.
  1. Don’t follow fad diets or do what everyone else is doing. You aren’t everyone else. Your needs are unique. Your lifestyle, exercise frequency, genetics, hormones, stress, sleep, ect is different. This is why having a coach that can use all these variables to your advantage is invaluable.

Whenever you see a new diet on TV or in a magazine, ask yourself: “Can I eat this way forever?” If not, it’s not worth consideration. Save yourself a lot of pain today and guilt in the future. Most diets aren’t sustainable for the majority of people that try to follow them..

We follow this prescription from CrossFit’s founder, Greg Glassman:

“EAT MEAT AND VEGETABLES, NUTS AND SEEDS, SOME FRUIT, LITTLE STARCH AND NO SUGAR. KEEP INTAKE TO LEVELS THAT WILL SUPPORT EXERCISE BUT NOT BODY FAT.”

Put another way by Michael Pollan, author of “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” and “In Defense of Food”:

“EAT FOOD. NOT TOO MUCH, MOSTLY PLANTS.”

Keep it simple. Then go work out!
