Definition: persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success:”his perseverance with the technique illustrates his single-mindedness.
Being a quitter is a habit.
Persevering is a habit, but how does someone develop this habit.
It starts with the mindset you have when you enter into the thing you want to accomplish. If you’re determined to accomplish a goal, you’ve more than likely prepared yourself for future hardships.
You’re not expecting smooth sailing. You know there are going to be days and weeks where you fail miserably, but you’ve made up your mind that you aren’t quitting then these setbacks occur. You’re ready to learn from these setbacks and overcome them THIS TIME.
This time is different.
The second thing one must to do persevere is to cancel reservations. A reservation to quit when things don’t go as planned. If you have a reservation prior to entering in, you’ll take it. You’ve made this reservation many times before and it’s a place of comfort for you. It must be killed. You must tell yourself you aren’t taking the reservation this time.
The last thing you must do to persevere is to have a cause or a why more important than yourself. The surface stuff won’t last. Sure you want to get fit to look and feel better, but that stuff really doesn’t keep you coming to the gym or sticking with a goal. The things that do keep you pointed toward your end goal are things like:
To live a long life so I can see my kids grow up and have grandkids.
Because it’s healthy for me and it’s the responsible thing to do. Not liking it doesn’t matter, it’s the right thing to do.
I can help others by doing this thing. It’s not about me it’s about ______________.
I have a family history of ___________ and I don’t want that to be my outcome.
I have social anxiety and being part of a community is a way for me to work through my struggle vs avoiding it.
You get the picture. Are you ready to persevere? Maybe you just need to start over and set a plan using some of these tools.
Write it down and take action. We often times overthink things and wait for the perfect time to come, which is never. Do it today. The worst thing that will happen is failure. Not trying is a greater failure. You can learn from your mistakes and try again.
That’s life. That’s how you persevere and succeed.
