How To Be Successful At The Gym

“I don’t know what to do or how to do it.” I hear this frequently in regards to potential members referring to their trips to their previous gym. People have good intentions, they want to get in shape, but they typically don’t know where to start, how often to train, if they are doing the exercises right, and how much they should be doing.

Unfortunately most American’s want results fast and as cheap as possible. That doesn’t work. If it did, I wouldn’t be sitting across from 20 people each week frustrated from years of failed attempts at Planet Fitness. Most aren’t even going, yet they are paying their membership dues because it’s so cheap.

For people that are intrinsically motivated, disciplined, and well trained, CHEAP works. They can have success at an $200 a month gym, a $10/month gym, or free at home. It doesn’t matter where they are or what they have to do it with, they get it done. These people are the minority.

For the majority of people we see, cheap won’t work. We are more expensive and rightfully so. Yet people still want a cheap fix to a complex problem. It’s kind of like trying to pound a square peg into a round hole over and over again. People want to keep trying cheap solutions.

In order to be successful we have found that people need these 3 things week in and week out long-term to get lasting results:

  1. Accountability. This comes in many forms at our gym. We have contracts for a few of our membership options. Having some skin in the game is important. We have a client retention manager that keeps tabs on our attendance. If you haven’t been in the gym all week we will be getting ahold of you. We have a nutrition program as well that has a high level of accountability. We have clients log their food and we meet face to face on a regular basis.
  2. Structure. People need to walk into structured classes or 1-1 sessions. This takes the thinking out of the equation. All you have to do is show up, we handle the rest. A lot of time is wasted at the gym thinking about what you are going to do, how to execute it, and if it’s too much or not enough. We program everything in advance to get results for our clients.
  3. Coaching. Everyone needs a coach. I have a mentorship program and a personal coach I pay $350 a month for a 1 hour phone call and access to amazing information to help our business. If you aren’t willing to invest in yourself, nobody else will. A coach sees the big picture for you and holds you accountable to your goals. They encourage you, correct you, and put you on the right path. If you will listen to them and accept their direction.

Success won’t come on your terms. It won’t come cheaply. You shouldn’t want cheap health and fitness anyways. It’s your body. Treat it well.
